Practice Your Listening Skills!
It’s Sunday and I decided to take a break and do some much-needed reading.  This week I’m reading How to Know Higher Worlds by Rudolf Steiner.  Although this book doesn’t really have anything to do directly with business or customer service, I found a passage in the book that I think we can apply to our positions:

“On the path to higher knowledge this listening skill is extremely important.  We must be accustomed  to listening in such a way that we quiet our own inner life completely when we listen...we must learn to silence any agreement or disagreement with the opinions we hear.”

One of the things that I’m working on is to listen intently to what others are telling me.  I used to often have this internal “chatterbox” that would judge what someone was telling me.  Other times I was just simply in “La-la” land thinking about what I was going to say.  I simply got lost in my own thinking that I didn’t hear what the other person was actually telling me.  I’m sure that this happens with many of us - especially when we’re dealing with an irate or difficult customer. 

So this week, I would advise to practice your listening skills!
