Social Media and Getting Past the Hype
“Joining the conversation” may possibly be the catch-phrase of the year when it comes to marketing your business online and managing the relationships you have with customers.  Those of us who have been part of the conversation may feel somewhat jaded because we’ve been doing it for so long.  Although there are some people who don’t have to join the conversation, as a business you should still be aware of what people are saying about you.

Yes, there is a great deal of hype around social media, but I happen to think it's a good thing.  We need as many businesses as possible to become involved with the online community.  We want businesses to engage with their customers.

That said, I'd like to share with you a website that the people over at 1to1 Media just launched:  www.getpastthehype.com.  If you're looking for help with your online social media/networking strategy, this website could be a good place to start.

And speaking of social media, this past Sunday I was a co-host of a show on BlogTalkRadio which covered the topic of Twitter.  I joined Sarah Conley of Coutorture, the online fashion forum, to chat about what Twitter is and how you could use it to connect with people.

Maria,

Thank you for sharing the link. Like you, I believe hype is often necessary to spread the word about new strategies and tactics, especially ones difficult in understanding their value and are visionary and long-term.

Maria,
Thanks so much for sharing the www.getpastthehype.com link. I agree that spreading the word on something as game-changing as social media is vital. That said, having been through the CRM hype cycle, our goal is to help companies see through the buzz on social media and jump into the fray based on having made smart decisions about how and why. Companies should experiment and take risks, but they also need a goal that's more than "just because."
P.S. I love the photo!

Hi Lewis and Ginger,

It is good for companies to map out a social media plan and figure out what would work for them. With so much talk about it, a company can easily get caught up in something that doesn't bring any benefit.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
