A Lesson We Can Learn From March Madness
Like many basketball fans across the country, I’ve been tuned into “March Madness” the past couple weeks - which is not very productive, but is boosting my morale... ;)  This is the month of the big college basketball tournaments and it has been madness, to say the least.  What’s really exciting for me is to see the underdogs make it past the first round.

march%20madness.jpgThis year there were a few teams who did make it past the first round even though many people didn’t think they would.  It was nice to see USD (University of San Diego) beat out a better ranking team although they ended up losing in the second round to Western Kentucky.

When it comes to tournaments like this, ranking doesn’t mean anything.  These teams are putting all their heart, soul, and energy into winning.  It’s anybody’s game at this point in the season - as Duke (a team who has made it to the Final Four many times) discovered after a major upset.

“It’s all about focus,” I heard a sports analyst say about the basketball games.  “The teams that stay focused are going to win.”

This is a statement we can all learn from.  The topic of staying focused is something I’ve talked about time and time again, but it stands to be repeated - especially since there are still many high-paying CEOs and executives who are not focused.  Or should I say that they’re focused on the wrong things…

Are you staying focused on your customers?

Isn't it funny that college basketball seems to get so much more attention than the NBA? I am sure that the NBA has enough marketing staff to fill a colesium, but yet March Madness enthralls everyone. Its hard to find an office without a pool.

Hi Benjamin,

Yes, there's so much energy surrounding college basketball! Not to mention that Dick Vitale always gets me hyped up! I see all those screaming people in the stands - it reminds me of when I used to watch games back in college.

Watching college players is like seeing a new hire work the sales floor. They're full of energy and hope. I think once you hit NBA status you tend to get complacent.
