Good Customer Service Starts Within
In my studies of psychology and spirituality I've come to realize that in order for someone or some aspect of our society to change, it has to start with each individual.

Currently I'm reading a book titled High Way From Hell (full review will be posted at The Good Life soon).  In Chapter 13, the author talks about integrity and self-love idispair.jpgn relation to service:
"Loving yourself completely is an absolute prerequisite to serving others with genuine integrity.  What is called selfless service is only selfless, can only be selfless, when the need of the person for self-acceptance has been satisfied.  This is not an egoic thing.  The lack of self-acceptance in a person whose heart is full of self-judgments, self-criticisms and un-integrated emotional fragments will prevent service to others from being as beneficial to the collective mind as it could be.  Heal yourself first, then you can more effectively assist others in your universe..."
Many people these days are angry and resentful towards themselves and the company they work for. This is one of the reasons why we generally have such

poor service.  Customer service is a psychological thing and any dis-ease that a person feels will manifest itself in the business and personal relationships that person has.  This is something I've talked about briefly before, but I think it's worth revisiting.

I think it's important to realize that service goes beyond just providing products to customers.  Every contact you make with someone else is a chance to make someone else's life better or more meaningful in some way.  Yes, even if a customer just comes into your store to buy a hammer or a 50 cent item, on a deeper level you can create some kind of positive connection that not only affects their life, but will bring good karma into your life.

Customer Service Starts with You
There's a quote by Ghandi that I always think about:

"Be the change you want to see in the world"

Thus, if we really want to change customer service, it has to start with you!  If you work for a company that doesn't provide very good customer service, take the initiative and start providing exceptional service to your fellow co-workers and customers.  Be the example and others will follow.
