In business and life there are two P's you should focus on:
Focus on Your Passions
When you focus on your passions, serving will come naturally. Your vision for you life will be fueled by that passion. I'll offer myself as an example...
When I first got out of high school I took a job as a telemarketer for a State Farm insurance agent. I was young and didn't know any better. I loved art and fashion, but instead of finding a job that supported those passions, I went for something that would "just pay the bills". Needless to say I left that job three months later after I realizing how unhappy I was. My next job was with Wet Seal and I ended up staying with them for 7 years and worked my way up to Store Manager. Because I was working in an environment that supported my love for fashion, I had no problem helping women find new outfits!
Are you in a position that complements your passion? Are you focused on your passion?
Focus on People, Not Sales
I know I've said this before, but it bares repeating. (Repetition is the way we learn, after all). When you focus on people, they feel valued and will remember you. You create long-lasting friendships and the referrals will pour in like crazy!
So, how do you "focus on people"?
1. You determine what is important to them - not what is important to you - and you do this by listening carefully.
2. If you communicate with people via an online newsletter or blog, you provide valuable content.
3. You never stop thanking them.
When you focus on these two P's, you are serving and that's how you achieve success!
