Web 3.0: A Shift in Business Strategy

I think it's time for an upgrade from Web 2.0 to Web 3.0.

We are entering new territory in which customers now have the upper hand in determining what they want.  There's no more guessing or attempting to predict what the customer wants because they're now being loud and clear about their needs.  Whether it's chat rooms, blogs, Facebook, MySpace, or online groups and forums - the customer is there.

For me Web 3.0 means a shift in the way businesses are run.  Companies will start to compete based on customer service and their business strategy will encompass all the feedback and experiences that their customers face.  Companies will also be more aware of what's being said about them online and will be quicker in responding to problems.

Before we get to web 3.0, I think we need to figure out web 2.0. Web 1.0 took use years to realize that Brick and Mortar was the solution. Now web 2.0 is here and we are learning how our customers can help improve our businesses online. On my blog, SheeleyTech,I write about the idea of Web2.0 and Mortar.

I’ve been reading a lot about Web 3.0 lately. In fact, I believe it was just showcased at a tech conference. However, if you look closely at Web 2.0, you’ll note that it’s not been fully utilized yet, and is just now getting into a stage of being fully explorable. Most critics believe that Web 3.0 is in its very beginning stages and is still very much a work in progress. As with any other type of technology, computer consultants (and I work with a lot of them) and other technology experts warn very strongly against being an early adopter of new and very under-developed technologies. Firstly, you’re going to come into contact with a lot of usability problems that haven’t been worked out just yet. Secondly, you’re going to end up with quite a few compatibility issues, because most of the world will not (and will not for a while) be using it. So I think that before we all get too excited about Web 3.0 and start to use it exclusively, we need to give it a chance to be further developed and explored and also fully explore Web 2.0 technologies.
