
When I was in management, one of my biggest pet peeves was to catch salespeople standing behind the counter "chattin' it up". The cash register counter was the equivalent of the water cooler - a place where the girls would hang around to gossip and chat. The idea of a customer walking in to see girls just standing around doing nothing didn't sit well with me. Besides, there were way too many things to do. After all, this is retail and there's enough work to go around - always! Also, there was the chance that a customer could walk in unnoticed and therefore didn't get the service that he/she needs.
As Mike Sansone says, "So get out from behind the counter, get off the pedestal, mingle with your readers. They won't bite." In our case, mingle with your customers!
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take Mike's advice and go mingle with some readers!
