Move Over Starbucks, Here Comes Caribou Coffee
As many of you know, I’m a big-time coffee drinker and talk about Starbucks quite often. I think I visited Starbucks just about every other day last year and this year, well, I’ve been frequenting other coffee shops just to get a feel of other places and to see if perhaps there’s another company out there that could provide a better experience. So far, I’ve found a couple shops that I like. So, sorry Starbucks, I’m no longer a loyal customer ;( caribou.jpg

Well, today I read about a coffee chain named Caribou Coffee. It’s based in Minnesota and currently has 500 stores in 18 states. Michael Coles, the CEO said this about his Caribou:

"We know we are not No. 1 in size, but we can be No. 1 in experience.”

Uh, oh. Watch out, Starbucks!  There aren't any Caribou Coffee locations in San Diego, so I'd love to hear about your experience, if any, with this company!

The customer experience can be a differentiator for any brand, and Caribou sounds like it has a great supporter for that: it's CEO. In the USA, coffee houses are becoming the "pubs" of the UK, in some ways. They are more and more being seen as a great place to meet and socialize. With this being the case, creating the right customer experience will be critical to growth for not just existing customers but also for word of mouth!

Thanks for sharing, Maria!

Becky,

Yes, great customer service starts at the top. If the CEO can't endorse it, then it's highly unlikely that employees will either. Let's hope that more CEOs will step up to the plate!

I love Caribou Coffee and frequent the shops in Minnesota when I am there visiting family and friends. I noticed some of you inspiration comes from Alaska and I was wondering if you are ever planning on opening up any shops in Alaska!! I would love to one here!

Caribou coffee is 61% owned by an Islamic Bank:

Since when can a bank be Islamic, genius? Ooo, they also invest in Church's Chicken! Watch out for that terrorist fried chicken!

It is the best coffee I've found in Maryland. The appearance and atmosphere of the stores are much more appealing than Starbucks.

This is a down-to-earth place where a small coffee is still called a small coffee and not a "tall" coffee.

I was born and raised in Minneapolis,Minnesota but now live in Oklahoma. When I visit my family I always make the rounds to different Caribou shops the atmoshpere in the shops remind you of a mountain lodge what would be cool is to visit one in the winter since they have fireplaces and the decor is so cool even the chairs have cut out designs of the caribou on them.Oh, and the coffees are great, like the Mint Condition latte or a Caramel High Rise latte. Caribou please get a shop in southeastern Oklahoma!!!!!!!!!!

I also returned to the Minneapolis area this summer and visited the Caribou stores again.
I moved from MN to NY app. ten years ago and surely thought that they would be here by now.
The Caribou experience is 100% better than Starbucks!
I do think that if Caribou even tried to compete they would be number one nation wide! It's difficult to explain why....other than the coffee and espresso drinks being better, employees seem to love their jobs, stores are clean and inviting and FUN for everyone including your kids!!!

I LOVE caribou coffee! I dont understand how they havent taken over the coffee shop world yet. The coffee is better, the people are more friendly, the wifi is FREE!! what more could you ask for?

I happen to work at one of the Caribou Coffee locations in Minnesota. I have had jobs in other fields, but I have to say that "We" as employee's, get treated with respect and dignity.

It's easy to promote a product when the company you work for is devoted to having the "BEST!"

I love "THE BOU"

Here is a link with driving directions to the Caribou Coffee location in Dubai. I warn you now, it's a really long drive. Bring your Wi-Fi enabled devices.
