The Million Dollar Question

Phil over of Make It Great! asks the question over at LinkedIn:

“What's the best question you've ever asked or been asked that helped you get to know someone better?"

It’s an interesting question because I love to probe into people‘s minds.  Maybe it’s my psychology training and the fact that I’m a bit nosy.  But I really like tomillion%20dollars.jpg know who I’m dealing with and what intellectual or spiritual level they’re on - but most importantly, what connection do we have?

One question I like to ask people is, “If you had a million dollars to spend right now, what would you do with it?”

Now, from my perspective, there is no right and wrong answer to this.  Everyone has different intentions in life.  However, their answer gives me a clear idea of what a person’s priorities in life are.  I also like to ask this question to give someone some food for thought.  Perhaps it will get them to think a little bigger and expand their minds.

Well, this is probably a question you don’t ask your customers, but hey, why not ask it?  If anything, it will stir up a great conversation and it’ll probably make them wonder why you’re asking it.  If they ask you why you ask the question, you can simply say, “I just want to get to know you better.”  If anything, they’ll definitely remember you and will leave them with a different experience....It could also be a question you may want to ask a prospective customer service employee!

Remember that game of tag that went around and is still going around in the blogosphere?  I’m going to copy the concept and tag five people (Rosa Say, Kammie Kobyleski, Ellen Weber, Starbucker, and Liz Strauss) with this question:

If you could spend a million dollars right now, how would you spend it?

Hi Maria, thanks for the link over at the Good Life. I actually have one of those million dollar bills in my wallet. I got it about 8 years ago :-)

(I'm assuming a million after taxes)

That's "easy" - I'd bank 1/2 of it and then:
1. Build at least two Habitat homes;
2. Set up my own non-profit to help people with the "little things" like an apartment deposit, getting brakes repaired, etc. There are millions of people to whom even $50 can make a huge difference in their ability to keep their lives together.

And here's another question for you: "What was your biggest failure and what did you learn from it?"

Hi Maria - thanks for the tag; stay tuned for my answer!
All the best.

My biggest failure was blowing $16,000 in six months by going on shopping sprees. I was young and didn't know any better. I should have invested it in real estate or stocks ;)

I've learned to be wiser about my spending...
