Seth Godin said something that stirred up quite a bit of emotion in me:
“...they try to reason with the customer and pretend that they realize we have a lot of choices and that they're grateful for our business. Of course, the person you're dealing with isn't actually grateful. In fact, if you went away, it would make her day a lot better.”
In all of my years working in customer service, I have to say that this is 100% true. Let's focus on that word “grateful”...
I’ll admit that there were periods when I was angry and resentful towards my job. But I finally woke up and realized that I have a choice. I could sit and stew in my misery or I could do something about it. It was then that I changed my perspective and viewed my customer service job as a stepping stone to bigger and better things. Looking back on all those years working in what I thought was a “mundane” job, I fully understand why I did what I did and I’m grateful for that experience.
It’s hard to find people who actually know and live moment by moment in gratitude. When you are not grateful, it shows in your actions. How you feel on the inside manifests itself on the physical dimension. Are you grateful for your job?
Are you grateful for the business you have?
Are you really grateful for your customers?
It’s funny because I’m typing this as I’m watching Oprah. The topic is the movie The Secret and the concept of gratefulness. (A MUST-SEE movie for anyone) If you’re feeling that your customer service job sucks or that your customers suck and your business is never going to be successful, it’s time to change your mindset!
