Why CEOs Should Blog

Damon of Damon’s Details talks about whether or not CEOs should blog and his first statement is:

All CEOs should not blog.

I somewhat disagree on this because I feel that CEOs are the ones who set the tone and culture of the company.  I like to know what’s going on in the CEO’s mind.  I want to know what they have planned for the company.  blogging.gif

However, the only time I think a CEO should not blog is if the CEO is incompetent.  I don’t want to know how much of a jerk he/she is or how he/she wants to take over the industry.  That’s the only time I say that a company should leave the blogging to other executives or consumer advocates within the company.

With that said, I also feel that the CEO should not be the only one blogging for the company.  Employees from all departments should be represented in the blog.  Prime example:  Southwest Airlines

Maria,

I don't think the CEO should blog unless he or she can communicate successfully in writing. many fine CEO's just don't write that well. Second, the CEO should want to blog; not see it as an "other duty as assigned."

But I do agree that not enough CEO's are blogging.

Glenn

Glenn,

You do make a good point. There are some CEOs who are not great communicators and therefore, should not blog. In that case, they should dictate to their secretary?
How they got the job in the first place, then, I don't know - but that's another topic!

Hi Maria,

Thanks for the mention!

My personal take is that only some CEOs are actually really good at it. I would probably find it more important to engage with someone in the company that can *help* if there is a situation, or with someone that has a real deep knowledge of the product/services that the company offers (product, marketing, customer service, etc.). I also think that the time of the CEO gets more valuable as the company grows, so a CEO generally has larger things to work on that probably affect the company more than blogging.

We wouldn't have wanted the recently outed CEO from Home Depot blogging, no?
