The problem with some independent online reviews is that competitors can log on as a disgruntled customer and if there is no traceback to them they can do damage without consequence to themselves.
It is difficult for a retailer or other service provider to track and manage this as there are so many forums, newsgroups and other online services where this can occur.
I think review sites need to be very transparent to ensure that objectivity is retained. When I look at these sorts of services I want to know who funds them. I look at the complaints logged to see if there is appropriate advice being given and if there is evidence of bias for or against certain products or companies.
Unfortunately, a lot of consumers take what they see online as true. You only have to look at snopes.com to see that that is not always the case
