In reading the October issue of Entrepreneur Magazine this morning I came across an interesting statistic: 68% of business students are interested in owning their own businesses.
Now considering that many universities these days still don’t offer a class in customer service, it makes me a little nervous. Nervous because in my honest opinion, the educational system in the U.S. grooms kids to become followers. These students are not required to take classes on social skills and dealing with clients/customers - which is why I believe every business major should take a psychology class. Forget math - except for the basics, of course! After all, we need to know if we’re making money or not! BTW - I took Calculus and grumbled the whole time about how I’ll never use it in the real world. I don’t remember squat about the subject! -
Now - on the same page where I read the statistic mentioned above is an article where Alvin Toffler, co-author of Future Shock and Revolutionary Wealth: How It Will Be Created and How It Will Change Our Lives, says, “They’ll find [that] the failure to do so creates a lot of young people who are incapable of working in the new economy, and causes more social problems. It will cost businesses in the form of taxes, social welfare costs and so forth. Simultaneously, it will reduce the capacity of [U.S.] businesses to compete in the world.”
Any thoughts on this? Is there indeed a dysfunction in our educational system that is causing this lack of customer service?
