The July 2006 issue of Filipinas Magazine has a feature story on the life of call center agents in the Philippines. For many Filipinos, working at a call center has improved the quality of their lives as the pay is much better than the average customer service position in the country. For an in-depth view of how call centers have affected the economy in the Philippines, check out Technopinoy's post.
There are many people who are against outsourcing customer service to overseas countries. However, I think we should have some compassion for people who simply are trying to make a living. What I'd like to point out is a quote from a person who works in a call center. Put yourself in this person's shoes:
"Sometimes they mock you when they find out you are Filipino and it's hard to restrain yourself, but you must because our calls are monitored. What's even more difficult is, you have to be perky again in your next call. We are talking of a five second interval. It's tough for me because I get affected by insults."
