Today I read that Southwest Airlines is going to test seat assignments for passengers to see whether or not assigning seats will slow down the unloading and loading of passengers. The change isn't set in stone, so I'm glad for that.
Many Southwest customers like the option of being able to choose where they want to sit, myself included. They're the only airline in the U.S. that offers this. I think that assigned seating may even cause slow down in the process of boarding a plane as some people fumble with their ticket stubs trying to remember where they're supposed to sit. Meanwhile there's a line behind them. Then you have people who sit in other people's seats, so they have to get up and find the right seat.
Well, who knows, there may be a difference in time between having seat assignments vs not having seat assignments. We'll just have to wait and see. In the meantime, you can check out Gary Kelly's thoughts on this at the Southwest Blog...You can also read more about it at The Airline Hub.
