I was reading Forbes today and came across an ad for Toyota that says:
"Being a good corporate citizen starts with hiring lots of good citizens"
And in a paragraph below that statement says this:
"What's a good corporate citizen? It's not about awards or mission statements or press releases. It's about people. People who care about what they do and how they do it..."
Finding good people nowadays can be a difficult process, especially in customer service. In an article called "How to Hire Good People", Chuck Thomsen of 3D/International advises:
"It helps to keep interviews one-on-one. You can have a more candid conversation. Too often we use interview to over a resume. We don't get acquainted, don't plumb the intellect, explore values. We all have a social patina of manners that masks who we really are. We exchange banalities, recite the history of our career in regulation jargon. But to get to know people, we need to get their masks off. To do that we need to get ours off first. We need to find meaningful things to talk about. Here are some questions that might help you get through the banalities:
What have you done that you are really proud of? What was your worst mistake? What are difficult decisions you have made? What was your most unique problem?"
