Grade Customer Service in the United States

There's an interesting poll at MSN Money asking what grade you would give customer service in the United States. As of this writing, there are 781 votes in and here is the current standing:

A
  57%

B
  3%

C
  7%

D
  15%

F
  17%

I find it quite interesting that there 57% of votes are "A"!  I'm not sure what constitutes an "A" grade, but for me, I would probably give the U.S. a "C".  It's on a rare occasion that I'm wowed by a company.  I would have to be wowed on a daily basis to give an "A".  From my own experience and what I've been reading on the web, the country that would get an "A" is Japan.  Anyone want to challenge that?

This is an interesting survey, Maria! I wonder how my country would fare if I do a similar survey. Well, I've not been to Japan but I hear my friends say they fell in love with the country the moment they stepped into it.

Back in February there were a number of traditional surveys (i.e. Retailer’s Assoc, etc.) that came out and showed the ratings for national customer service as low as 37%, an all time low. MSN’s survey is a little skewed toward its readers, so although an indicator certainly not without bias. Still, 57% is nothing to howl at the moon about.

I doubt if customer service has really improved. Maybe people are forgetting how bad they were treated during their Christmas shopping adventures. In individual cases yes the customer service may have improved, but not over all. AOL is a good recent example as are the issues with Home Depot.

Small businesses aren't doing much better. Hmm, wake up world customer service is an absolute to success in today’s market place.

Maria, I'd give the US a bit more credit. Even companies that traditionally have the perception of offering poor service - like cable and satellite TV, for example, have JD Power satisfaction ratings of closer to 75%. I work for a smallish family business that recently took a customer survey and we had 80% overall satisfaction. I also think consumers grade specific companies higher than general statements. A good thought provoker Maria- thanks.

Hello I have had the worst service it seems as at least 3 times a week I have customer service issues. I have real strong feelings towards customer service in the United States I feel disgusted with probably 75% of the service that I receive. When I went to Thailand I had no problems even with the language barrier. I don't know whether I am disgusted with customer service in the U.S. or with customer service which all humanity provides. I am seriously thinking about leaving this country because of customer service.
