I serve on the planning committee for an annual fundraising event that benefits a local (San Diego) nonprofit organization called ARTS. ARTS stands for A Reason To Survive and volunteers go out into the community to work with kids who are facing adversity. It certainly feels very good to be part of a team that cares so much about kids. And of course, we're not even getting paid to do what we do - the reward is simply being able to see a smile on these kids' faces and knowing that we have made a difference in their lives.
I started reading "The Big Moo" a few days ago (by the way, a must read for any business person). There's a chapter in there that asks us to imagine working for free. What if we had to depend on donations from our customers to survive? How would you change how you interact with your customers? Would you treat them like your family? Definitely something to think about....
P.S. ARTS is still seeking donations for the fundraising event that will take place on May 20th. If you are a business that would like to make a donation of your products or services, please contact me at maria [at] customersarealways [dot] com. Monetary donations are also welcome :) For more information about ARTS, visit: http://artsurvive.org/
