In one of Donald Trump’s books he advises us to keep a dossier on people. I agree that it’s important to become personal with your customers and get to know them in such a way that enhances the business relationship.
When I worked at Nordstrom in the children’s shoe department, I kept track of customer’s favorite brands, what size shoe the kids wore, the style of shoes they liked, birthdays, etc. So, when new shoes came in that I thought they would like, I gave the customer a call to let them know. They appreciated the personal service that I gave them. If they wanted to purchase an item immediately over the phone, I was able to take their credit card info and hold the item for them to pick up, or I could ship it to them. These options saved a lot of time, something I know we all like to do!
Remember that building relationships with customers is an ongoing process. That first sale is your gateway to a lifelong loyal customer.
What are you doing to get to know your customer? Do you have a system of keeping track of your customer’s needs and wants?
