
I read somewhere that if you have an online business that you shouldn't put too many out-links because you want to keep the customers at your site. However, an article I read today at BusinessWeek Online is making me rethink this strategy.
Jesse James Garrett says "Websites designed to keep users stuck in place only generate ill will." He asks us to "Imagine a retail store in which the staff blocked your way when you tried to exit without making a purchase..."
By providing resources in the form of linking to other sites, even your competition, you're building trust and loyalty with your customers. You trust that your customers will come back to visit and they trust you to give them valuable information.
