Here's what Miles says about the subject:
"Customer follow-up can also earn you additional income. Once you have thanked your customer for their business don’t forget that you can recommend additional related products and services. This practice which is also known as your backend can earn you even more money than you made from the original sale."
When I worked at Nordstrom I sometimes would call a customer up a few days later to see if the shoes were working out for them. The customer was always so grateful and happy that I went out of my way to call them. They certainly remembered me the next time they came in! And yes, I did make more money than most of the salespeople there...
