Can't Do Without Librarians

I'm a HUGE bookworm.  Look up the word "bookworm" in the dictionarybookworm.gif and you'll see a picture of me next to the word :)  Reading and blogging certainly do go hand in hand :)

I came across "Codicer Noviate's" blog today.  He's studying Library Information Science at the School of Informatics at University of Buffalo.  I have to admit that I was unaware that "library information science" was a field of study.   Reading his blog has given me a new-found respect for librarians and the service that they provide.

I want to help him out by spreading the word....

"...it is important for Librarians to make the public aware of what it is we do in the first place - and how important and diverse our duties are. We need to take steps to change the opinions that people have that all librarians are responsible for is checking in and out books, shelving books and telling people to "shhh" if they get too loud. They need to understand that we are training to be CEOs, Marketing Reps, Customer Service reps, Information Technology Specialists and a whole slew of other positions - because we have to be. And we have to be librarians on top of that.

AMEN! I have been a public school librarian for 17 years and have seen many many changes in my role. I have served at elem., junior high, and now high school level. I have evolved from being just a resource person, to actually teaching with the teacher. When classes come in to do research, I teach them how to cite sources, search strategies on the web, how to locate and use print materials (yes, they are still relevant!). I do reader's advisory, budget, acquisitions, cataloging, processing. I give booktalks, run a libray club, give workshops for teachers on staff development days, and help troubleshoot technology problems. Am I busy? You bet! Is it worth it? Definitely yes! I love my job!!!! I am currently working on my master's degree (a long-time dream) and will finish in December. I hope to work in a public library as a director someday.

Yes, librarians are quite the busy people :) I applaud you for giving 100% in what you do. We definitely have to love our "jobs" and it certainly sounds like you do!
