For those of you who subscribe to AOL but are thinking about canceling their service, this post is for you. I went over my experience with them awhile ago, but I just read something at Bellevillenewsdemocrat.com that prompts me to cover this issue again.
A lady sends in an email to the bellevillenewsdemocrat.com asking this question:
"I recently changed to SBCGlobal.net and called AOL to cancel me. I got a young man who tried to scare me to death, telling me that if I canceled AOL I would lose their marvelous protections, their firewall, their spyware shield, etc., and my computer would crash and I would need a new one. He literally wouldn't take no for an answer and I hung up in anger.
Is any of what he told me true? Is AOL stuff superior to any other, and if not, how do I get rid of that darn AOL? Should I try AOL again and talk to someone else? What else is required to cancel?"
Do not let these AOL people bully you into keeping your service! None of this is true. You can get protection for your computer - firewall, spyware shield, etc. - from any other service provider or it can be purchased.
People who work in the cancellation department of AOL are paid a commission for every customer they keep. This is the only reason that they don't want you to cancel your service.
