The Customer Service Gospel According to Meloukhia

This is dedicated to the rude, the disrespectful, and the perverse customers out there.  I suggest you read Meloukhia's post, "How To Behave Like An Adult Without Even Trying" and find out what it really means to be a good customer.

Here are my favorite parts:

" Customer service representatives are people too. They work hard, long hours, and most of them really want to make you happy. Most of them want you to have a wonderful, positive experience in their establishment, and most of them will go above and beyond to ensure that you are pleased. So please, don't make it any harder on them..."

and...

" I think being rude requires concentrated, focused effort that could be better spent on other things. You don't need to try to behave like an adult--you already are one, now act like it."

Thanks Maria for pointing out this one. Being in the customer service industry and agents handling 50 calls a day is a hard job. We always dread those who call in just to make it harder. If we could have customers treat us as human beings then it would make it easier for us. Good on you mate!

Meloukhia is partly right and then a resounding no. Yes, there are a handful (small) that go through life with something biting them on the back side and no matter what that’s the way it is. I feel sorry for the rep or clerk, or owner that has to deal with these aborigine mentalities.

However, studies do show that most disgruntled customers have a right to be frustrated disappointed and to feel slightly used and stepped on. Instead of ducking the bullet maybe as business people we need to catch it between are teeth, swallow a humble pill and actually listen to them vent and solve the problem.

It’s far more important to provide a reason and the motivation for good customer behavior than to play the blame game. No it is never fun dealing with rude over heated customers, but then maybe they are that way for a reason. Solve the reason and you have a customer for life.

Thanks Jam and Tim for your comments. I think that Meloukhia was referring to those customers that are just plain rude for no other reason than they just feel like being that way...
Customers that throw their trash around in your store or feel like they're royalty and you should suck up to them.
