Imagine staying at a hotel where every transaction can be done with your room keys. You can gamble at the casino, purchase souvenirs at the gift shop, and hey, you can even buy a coke in the vending machine down the hall!
Wouldn't that make for a great customer experience?
Seth Godin has something to say about it:
" With all the technology and information packed into a hotel room key, it's not particularly difficult to imagine how this would work. Hotels have done almost nothing with this ability. Once they see how they can personalize and customize the visitor experience, there are countless ways both sides can profit."

Not really. Generally hotel keys differ from location to location. What is so original about it? Why not pay with your cell phone, like in Japan, a much more elegant solution that can be implemented more easily at a larger scale than individualized solutions for hotels. Of course, it is easy to just say it, but what would actually take to implement it? How about running different accounting systems for hotels/coca cola machines/casinos? Would it be worth the cost of transforming those coke machines to match keys? I am sure it could be done, but why? Cell phones. Now, that's smarter.
