I shopped at Macy's this weekend, which I think is a great department store. However, my cashier didn't seem particularly happy to be working there. Maybe because it was Friday and she had worked all week? I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt, but somehow I had the feeling that her unhappy facial expression had been that way for years now.
There were problems running my card, so Ms. Unhappy points over to the Customer Service phone and tells me to call and find out what's going on with my account. My shopping time had run out, so I asked her if she could hold my items until the next day and I would call Customer Service from home. Ms. Unhappy informs me that there are no holds for sale items and then tells me talk to her manager, who happens to walk up at that moment.
"Sure, I'll hold it for you," Ms. Manager says. :)
I tell Ms. Manager of my card issue and she offers to call account services for me. (Now that's service!) I tell her that I don't have anymore time today and that I would return the next day.
If you're going to work in customer service: (1) Smile - and if you can't - find a coworker to make you laugh, and (2) Take that extra step so your customer doesn't feel inconvenienced.
